There is no best dress fabric — there is the right fabric for the SILHOUETTE. A dress is drape made visible: the same pattern in crisp poplin and fluid viscose produces two different garments. Decide the shape first; the fabric list writes itself.
Flowy and drapey
Wrap dresses, bias slips, gathered maxis: viscose challis and jersey, ITY (the wrap-dress fabric), Tencel, crepe, chiffon over lining. These fabrics move; they read romantic and forgiving.
Structured and crisp
Shirtdresses, fit-and-flare, anything with a defined waist: cotton poplin, sateen (with glow), linen for summer structure, stretch sateen for sheaths, ponte and scuba for sculpted knits that skip the zipper.
Evening and occasion
Satin for liquid shine, velvet for depth, lace over lining for texture, jacquard for woven pattern with body. Sequin and metallic cloth join this family for full-glamour briefs.

What fabric should a beginner pick for a first dress?
Cotton poplin or a stable midweight cotton: it holds still, presses flat and forgives unpicking. For a first knit dress, ponte or interlock.
How much fabric does a dress take?
Roughly 2–3 yards for a knee-length dress in wide (55-inch-plus) fabric, more for maxis, gathers and directional prints. Wide fabric — most of our shelf — usually beats the pattern envelope's estimate, which assumes 44-inch cloth.
What dress fabric does not wrinkle?
ITY is near-immune; crepe, ponte, scuba and polyester knits shrug off creases. Linen sits at the other pole and wears its wrinkles as style.
