What Is Jacquard Fabric?
Jacquard is not one fabric — it is any fabric whose pattern is woven or knit into the structure itself, thread by thread, rather than printed on the surface. Flip a jacquard over and you will see the design's negative on the back; scratch it and nothing comes off, because the pattern is the cloth.
The name comes from Joseph Marie Jacquard, whose 1804 loom attachment used punched cards to control individual threads — a machine so influential that early computing borrowed its cards. Every brocade, damask and woven-logo ribbon since is his descendant.
How jacquard is made
A jacquard mechanism lifts warp threads individually instead of in fixed groups, so the weave can change at any point in the cloth — that freedom is what draws flowers, medallions or geometry directly in structure. Knit jacquards do the same with needle selection, building the motif into the knit, often with a second color carried behind.
