Ponte, Explained
Ponte — ponte di Roma, Roman bridge — is a firm, smooth double knit with enough body to hold tailored shapes and enough stretch to skip the zipper. It occupies the most useful middle ground in fabric: garments that look structured and woven but pull on, move and shrug off wrinkles like knits. Workwear capsule wardrobes practically run on it.
What ponte is made of
The classic blend is rayon for hand, nylon or polyester for durability, and spandex for recovery — knitted in a dense double-knit structure with a fine crosswise grain. Quality varies with that recipe: rayon-rich ponte feels best; higher spandex recovers hardest. Cheap all-poly ponte with minimal spandex is where the fabric's one bad reputation — bagging knees — comes from.
What ponte feels like
Smooth, dense and springy, with a clean matte face that reads as suiting from a meter away. It has moderate stretch, strong recovery in good blends, does not curl or fray, and holds a pressed line surprisingly well for a knit.

Ponte is the second great beginner knit after interlock: it cuts clean, feeds straight and needs no edge finishing. Ballpoint needle, slight zigzag, and a press cloth on medium heat — high heat can shine the surface.
Ponte vs. scuba
Both are firm double knits. Ponte is matte, suiting-like and breathable-ish (rayon content); scuba is smoother, spongier and glossier — all polyester, more bounce, more body-con. Office silhouette, ponte; sculpted going-out shape, scuba.

Common questions
Is ponte fabric good quality?
The blend decides. Rayon-nylon-spandex ponte wears beautifully; bargain poly-heavy ponte pills and bags at the knees. Check the fiber content and stretch-recovery on the listing before committing to pants.
Does ponte wrinkle?
Barely — it is one of the most travel-proof fabrics you can sew. Hang it overnight and creases fall out.
Can you make a blazer from ponte?
It is the ideal first blazer fabric: enough body to hold lapels, no lining needed, forgiving fit, machine washable. Tailors have quietly used it for decades.
