What Is Suede Fabric?
Suede fabric — faux suede, suedette, microsuede — is woven or knit cloth, usually fine polyester microfiber, brushed until its surface raises into the soft, matte, peach-skin nap of suede leather. No animal involved: the look and hand come from millions of ultra-fine fibers standing at the surface, the textile equivalent of leather's buffed underside.
For sewing, the fabric version is honestly the easier material: it comes by the yard, cuts and seams like cloth, and shrugs off water that would stain real suede.
How faux suede is made
Microfibers many times finer than a human hair are woven or knit densely, then sueded — sanded and brushed so the fiber ends bloom into nap. The density of those fine fibers is what produces the characteristic ghosting: drag a finger across it and you write a visible stroke in the nap, exactly like real suede. Heavier faux suedes back the cloth for upholstery duty; lighter ones drape enough for shirts and dresses.
What suede fabric feels like
Velvety-dry and warm, with a matte richness that photographs like leather. Like every napped cloth it has direction — panels cut opposite ways read as different shades — and it resists wrinkling well. Unlike suede leather, it machine washes and does not stiffen after rain.

How to sew it
- Cut all pieces with the nap running the same direction (nap down usually reads smoothest on suede)
- Use clips or pin inside seam allowances — pin holes can be permanent
- Microtex or fine sharp needle, slightly longer stitch
- Finger-press or press from the back on low with a press cloth; a hot iron glazes the nap
- Topstitching looks terrific on this fabric and helps seams lie flat
Edges do not fray meaningfully — raw-edge hems and unlined designs are fair game.
Faux suede vs. real suede
Real suede is the flesh side of split leather: unmatched depth, but sold in irregular hides, easily water-spotted and dry-clean fussy. Faux suede is consistent, washable, cheaper and friendlier to sew — the practical choice for garments and busy furniture. Where budget and ethics both point the same way, the fabric wins most projects.
