Interlock, Explained
Interlock is a double knit: two layers of jersey knitted simultaneously and interlocked into one cloth. Both faces show the smooth V-side, the cut edges do not curl, and the doubled structure brings opacity and stability single jersey cannot match — which is why interlock is the knit sewing teachers hand to beginners.
What interlock feels like
Smooth on both sides, softly substantial, with a calm moderate stretch and decent recovery. It hangs flatter and more opaque than jersey at the same fiber — a white interlock tee is not see-through — and it presses and topstitches with woven-like manners while still moving like a knit.
What to sew with interlock
- First knit projects of any kind — it forgives everything
- Baby clothes and kids' wear (cotton interlock is the nursery standard)
- Polos, structured tees and dresses with body
- Pajamas and loungewear
Sew with a ballpoint needle and stretch stitch as with any knit, but expect none of jersey's drama: no curling edges, no laddering, no fighting the feed. Hems lie flat with a twin needle on the first try.
Interlock vs. jersey and ponte
Jersey is lighter and drapier with a wrong side and curling edges; interlock is thicker, calmer and two-faced. Ponte is interlock's firmer cousin — more body, more structure, usually with rayon and spandex in the blend — for blazers and pants where interlock would be too soft. Weight and drape decide: flow, jersey; friendly stability, interlock; tailored body, ponte.

Common questions
Is interlock the same as jersey?
They are related — interlock is essentially two jerseys knitted into one. The practical differences: interlock is thicker, more opaque, smooth on BOTH sides and does not curl at the edges.
Is interlock good for beginners?
The best knit there is for learning: stable under the foot, no curl, no run, opaque, and forgiving of tension mistakes. Cotton interlock in a mid weight is the classic first-knit purchase.
Does interlock shrink?
Cotton interlock shrinks like other cotton knits — a few percent on a hot first wash. Pre-wash and dry the yardage the way the garment will live, then cut.
