Spandex, Elastane & Lycra, Explained
Spandex, elastane and Lycra are three names for one fiber: a segmented polyurethane that stretches to five times its length and snaps back. Spandex is the American word (an anagram of expands), elastane the European one, Lycra a brand name. On a fiber-content label they mean the same thing.
You will almost never sew pure spandex. Its whole career is as a minority partner — 2 to 20 percent blended into another fiber — where it hands the host fabric its own superpower: recovery.
How spandex works
The polymer chains alternate rigid and flexible segments; stretch straightens the coils, release lets them spring back. In fabric, the spandex either wraps around or knits alongside the main yarn, so when you stretch the cloth the spandex stores the energy and pulls everything home. That pull-home — recovery — is the quality that separates leggings that hold from leggings that bag at the knees by noon.
How much spandex do you need?
- 2–5% — comfort stretch: jeans, fitted wovens, easier blazers
- 5–10% — fitted knits: tees that hug, dresses, ponte pants
- 10–20%+ — performance: leggings, swim, dance, shapewear
More is not automatically better; the right number follows the garment's job.
2-way vs. 4-way stretch
Two-way (better called one-direction) fabric stretches across OR along; four-way stretches both and recovers both — what leggings, swim and activewear require. Test by pulling a corner both directions, or read the stretch rating on the listing.
What to sew with spandex blends
- Leggings and bike shorts (nylon- or poly-spandex)
- Swimwear — with matching swim lining
- Dance, skate and costume wear
- Fitted dresses and bodysuits in jersey or velour blends
Sew with a stretch needle, a stretch stitch (lightning, narrow zigzag or serger), and polyester thread — cotton thread snaps when seams stretch. Never stretch the fabric as it feeds unless the pattern says so.
How to care for spandex blends
Two enemies: heat and chlorine. Wash cool, skip the dryer or use its lowest setting, and never iron directly — cooked spandex loses its snap permanently and hot dryers are the top killer of leggings and swimwear. Rinse swim in fresh water after every pool session.
One environmental note worth knowing: spandex is petroleum-based, and even a few percent of it makes a blend hard to recycle, because the elastane cannot be separated from the host fiber. The best counter is the one you control — cool washing and air drying double the working life of anything stretchy.

Common questions
Are spandex, elastane and Lycra the same thing?
Yes — one fiber, three names. Lycra is simply a brand of elastane, the way Tencel is a brand of lyocell.
Why did my leggings lose their stretch?
Heat, usually: dryers and hot washes break down the polyurethane, as does pool chlorine over time. The fabric still stretches but stops recovering. Wash cool, air dry, and good spandex keeps snapping back for years.
What is the difference between stretch and recovery?
Stretch is how far the fabric extends; recovery is how completely it returns. Recovery is the number that decides whether fitted garments keep their shape — cheap stretch fabric stretches fine and recovers poorly.
Does 100% spandex fabric exist?
Rarely outside industrial elastic — garment fabrics use spandex as a percentage partner. If a listing shows spandex in the blend, that is the stretch engine doing its quiet job.
